The Horrors of Female Genital Mutilation

Female Genital Mutilation (abbreviated FGM) is the mutilation of a woman's genitals. This comes in four main ways:

Type I

Partial or total removal of clitoral glans and/or prepuce.

Type II

Complete or partial removal of the labia minora, with or without removal of clitoral glans and labia majora.

Type III

Removal of external genitalia and vulva is sewn closed.

Type IV

Any other type of mutilation for non-medical purposes.

As of 2016, there are over 500,000 women at risk of FGM in the United States.
A law was passed in the United States in 1996, finally outlawing this practice. This law is 28 years old as of this year, older than eBay.

Women and girls have had their genitals mutilated legally less than 30 years ago.

The legality of FGM and the normalization of it has been a disgrace to the United States and its people. Women have died from this operation, not even counting how it could severely impact them later in life.

Even though it has been made illegal (albeit recently), that does not mean that FGM has stopped to a halt. There are still thousands of women in America today living with their genitals having been mutilated for the crime of being a woman.
